2022: Setting Our Course

Autumn. Just the word conjures up images of warm-colored foliage, foamy seasonal espresso drinks, and the anticipation of month-end holidays for the rest of the year. For many businesses, it also ushers in important annual processes such as strategic planning and budgeting. Saltchuk Marine has been diligently preparing for 2022 and sharing the highlights with you is a priority. Let’s start with our strategic plan.

These drive our 5 Year Goals:

  1. Safe & Compliant Culture

  2. Best in Class Return on Capital Employed (a financial ratio that measures our profitability and the efficiency with which our capital is employed).

  4. Marine Service Provider of Choice

  5. Operational Excellence

The diagram portrays that our 5 Year Goals drive our 1 – 3 Year Initiatives which, in turn, drive our 1 Year Improvement Targets.

Throughout August and September, our leadership team met to affirm and update all of these objectives for the coming year. At the timing of this newsletter, the 1 – 3 Year Initiatives and 1 Year Improvement Targets are being finalized, including feedback from employees throughout all of our companies. We are looking forward to sharing them with you in a variety of ways in the coming few months. We are also pleased to have employee representatives from across Saltchuk Marine to help us craft this messaging.

Turning our attention to budget, we made significant progress to our overall financial performance in 2021 over recent years. Our course is aggressive and clear: pursue the right sources of revenue for our companies, reduce expenses, and continuously improve processes that are weighing us down. Each one of you is vital on this journey and we encourage you to make suggestions to your captain, your manager, or any member of the leadership team.

One of our biennial employee survey questions is: “I know the company’s vision for the future.” We have paid careful attention to your responses. With less than 50% of you answering this question positively, we are focused on doing everything we can to improve this score next spring. We commit to sharing openly and frequently about our company’s vision and direction. We warmly invite you – grab a cup of coffee and join us for Town Halls, special video messages, newsletters, local meetings and other communication channels we are crafting to keep you informed of our course ahead.
