Letter from the CEO

Jason Childs, CEO - Saltchuk Marine

October 2021 Letter

My grandmother and mother used to quilt. The creation of a quilt takes resourcefulness, patience, and expression because quilts are typically composed of scraps of fabric that don’t seem like they fit together. But a talented quilter can make something wonderful from the disorder. When I think of my grandmother’s and mother’s fingers dancing through every stitch to create a blanket of comfort, warmth, and protection, I am reminded of the time that they devoted to each one.

Much like the critical stitches that hold the fabrics together, teamwork has helped the Saltchuk Marine Family overcome some big hurdles this year, and our patience and strategy are starting to pay off.

We have:

Managed our way through COVID and improved our overall safety culture: Foss Employee Simon Laulu was brave enough to share his powerful Covid story by speaking up and encouraging others through his authenticity and vulnerability.

Resolved the Fireboat litigation: Our Shipyard, Accounting, Finance, Engineering, and Legal teams worked together for 5+ years to resolve this. They were involved in countless requests for information and documents to support our position.

Resolved the YB rate case & subsequent audit: There are countless numbers of people who contributed to the effort (internal and external), specifically the YB Leadership Team: Kris Nakagawa, Chris Edwards, Chris Martin, Whit Olsen, Stevette Santiago, Megan Rycraft and Keith Kiyotoki. Just as the entire leadership team contributed, next level leaders throughout the Company also stepped up in support of each LT member/the Company. However, several members of the team stand out: Corey Robertson, Lauren Imada and Natasha Uelingtone.

Restructured the company with SMSS: Standing up a new company, from the ground up, was a big ask as we were simultaneously bringing Starlight into the fold. With that said, there are multiple departments and people to thank:

  • IT: Dave Thorsen, Jason Lingg, Brian Householder, Amy Schulz, Mindy Osbjornsen, Nick McDaniel, Richard Walsh, Gus Silva, Sean Ducharme, Colin Evanson, Khanh Truong, Brian Morris and Yazel Boudour.

  • HR: Darlene Crowder, Lisa Sulock, Midea Schasteen, Christie Ellis, Justin Borland, Grace Campbell and Kristin Cottell.

  • Accounting/Finance Project Team: Brian Aucott, Mary Halladay, Mike Kretzer, Jenny Wright, Jason Clinton and Brian Reid.

  • Legal Project Team: Sloane Perras

Created a long-term winning strategy: This strategy provides greater independence for the Operating Companies with support from SMSS and strengthens our core harbor tug business.

Renewed the Teck Contract and signed our 1st offshore wind contract: Paul Gallagher, Sloane Perras and Courtney Bradbury.
